The First Aid Certification is valid for two (2) years, and the CPR & AED (Adults, Children and Infants) Certification is valid for two (2) years from the training date.  Basic Life Support Certification is valid for two yearsBlood Borne and Airborne Certification expires after one year.

CPR means Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, and is performed by compressing the sternum (breast bone) deep and fast, without taking the hand off the chest. The purpose is to force the heart to keep moving the blood thru the body, to keep vital organs oxygenated. Includes help in case of choking – specially useful for restaurant employees and daycare personnel.

Based on the latest Guidelines established by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and published (in USA) by the American Heart Association, the compressions need to be done as sets of 30 compressions (pumps, down and up), followed by two breaths (the breaths should take less than 5 seconds), then 30 compressions, two breaths, 30 compressions, two breaths, and so on, until the Paramedics (EMT) arrive and take over. The breaths are optional.

“Deep” means the chest should be compressed about a third (1/3) of the depth of the chest (for children and infants, but NOT for adults), and that means at least 2″ (but no more than 2.4″ or 6 cm) for adults, about 2″ for children, and about 1.5″ for infants.

“Fast” in this case means between 100 and 120 times per minute, to be effective.

AED (Automated External Defibrillation) Certification enables each person who took the training to use an AED anywhere one is available, if a person becomes unconscious and suffers a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. AEDs can be found in most places where adults and children gather.

The AED Certification is bundled together with the CPR and BLS (Basic Life Support for the Health Care and Professional Rescuers, also called Professional CPR).
